The iPhone 8's dock might work more like the new iPad's

31 August 2017

If recent rumors are to be believed, Apple is in the process of making one of its biggest change in iPhone design since the launch of the device in 2007.

Apple has apparently redesigned the iPhone to feature an edge-to-edge display that's rumoured to cover the entire front of the phone, with a unique glass and metal finish.

Gurman, who obtained the information from images of the phone and insight from unidentified sources, says that Apple is indeed prepping three new iPhones for this year, including the iPhone 8.

Meanwhile, Apple is expected to launch the iPhone 8 on September 12.

When will it be released?

The next generation of Apple's trademark device, set to debut on September 12, will come with several updates and slick new features. IDC sees iPhone shipments rising 9.1% in 2018 after the iPhone 8, 7S and 7S Plus models are released.

Shares in the tech giant reached a record intraday high of US$162.96 yesterday and have risen to US$163.31 in U.S. pre-market trading following reports that it plans to unveil its next iPhone on 12 September. In June we posted a report titled "Apple Working on a Future Hand Gesturing Interface to Control Gaming, Apple TV and Home Appliances".

The phone is also rumoured to feature wireless charging thanks to new design features being built into the phone.

iPhone users who have held off on upgrading their old iPhone 5 and 5C may want to think about a new device soon.

Here in the United Kingdom, that could mean that people who opt for the top-of-the-line model and add extra memory could be saddled with a bill alarmingly close to £1,000.

Apple has never differentiated iPhone models within a family on cellular capabilities (Broadcom provides RF chips in support of the iPhone's cellular subsystem) or connectivity capabilities (Broadcom provides the Wi-Fi/Bluetooth connectivity combo chip). However, the screen won't be prominently curved like Samsung phones, such as the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 Plus. Apple's revenue for the quarter was up 7.2% compared to the same quarter a year ago. To accommodate the extra facial recognition sensors, the top of the screen features a small cutout in the middle, with the screen continuing on either side to display information such as battery life or mobile reception.

The New York Times is reporting that the latest iPhone will start at a price of $999 (£780). The firm's revenue was up 7.2% compared to the same quarter past year.
