Apple TV 4K launched

13 September 2017

Apple used its event at the Steve Jobs Theater in Cupertino Tuesday to introduce the Apple TV 4K, a next-gen video streamer that supports 4K resolution as well as HDR 10 and Dolby Vision.

Instead, Apple has now added the A10X Fusion processor, as found in the latest iPad Pro models.

It would be freaky indeed if Apple left the provision of 4K material to Netflix, so we also anticipate the arrival of 4K movies and TV shows at the iTunes Store. Apple announced they've partnered with Hollywood studios (Lionsgate, Universal, etc.) and Amazon Prime to bring users the biggest releases and more 4K content.

The new Apple TV 4K will be available for customers, starting September 22, at prices ranging from $179 for 32GB of storage to $199 for 64GB. The tech giant has some catching up to do with the Apple TV 4K, then.

tvOS is the version of iOS that works on the Apple TV. Apple claims the CPU is twice as fast as before, and that the GPU is four times as fast. In addition to Ultra HD, the new set-top provides support for high dynamic range (HDR) video, which greatly expands the color depth available on displays.

Apple is also bringing live sports to Apple TV with this new set-top box.

Apple already announced the Watch Series 3 which comes with cellular connectivity for the first time.

The user interface got a reboot, and there's a new Siri remote.

The next Apple TV is around the corner with the Apple TV 4K.

The Apple TV makes up just one part of Apple's ever-widening TV and movie strategy. It is priced at a premium over the existing HD Apple TV model because it supports both ultra high resolution video and high dynamic range. The older generation Apple TV will also remain on sale with a price tag of $150 with 32GB inbuilt storage. It can even control your smart home devices if they're Apple HomeKit-compatible.
