Porsche owner shoots homeless man over alleged noise plea

14 September 2017

Police said Melton was disturbed by exhaust fumes and loud music coming from Katie Quackenbush's Porsche SUV while trying to sleep on a sidewalk at 3 a.m. and asked her to move the vehicle.

Police said that Melton walked back to where he had been trying to sleep, only for Quackenbush to get out of her auto, allegedly with the gun that she used to shoot him twice in the abdomen. The suspect then fled the scene in her Porsche.

In October, 2013, the Amarillo Police Department arrested her on a misdemeanor domestic violence-related assault charge, which was dismissed six months later.

Quackenbush was arrested on Monday and later released after posting US$25,000 (AU$31,125) bail.

Mr Melton was left with critical injuries and was taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where he remains today.

Quackenbush was also arrested in December 2016 for misdemeanour assault. According to her Twitter profile, some of the songs she released include "Midnight Revival", and a "spoof" rap video, called "Ski Tips Up Hoes Down".

Court records show that Katie Quackenbush has no prior criminal convictions, but has been charged with assault twice. The case is still pending. The charge was later dropped.

Her father, Jesse Quackenbush, said his daughter opened fire because she felt threatened.

"It's been self-defense since day one, and the police have known this", Jesse Quackenbush told the news station.

The homeless man told police that the alleged shooter got back into her vehicle and left the scene. She then "fired a warning shot, but he kept coming", so she fired another "warning shot", he said.

Jesse Quackenbush said that a business owner in the area told him he had purchased weapons for his entire legal staff, and had got a guard dog, because Melton had "threatened to kill all of them over the a year ago and a half". She has not been named and charged. She said she did not know that the man was hit by the gunfire.

Katie Quackenbush has twice been accused of assualt in her home state of Texas. "Someone who appears to be either deranged, someone who may be on some sort of drug, who seems completely unhinged, and that's why she reacted the way she did".

Quackenbush's father, a prominent defense lawyer in Amarillo, Texas, told WSMV in Nashville that the police have told only part of the story. A third party who found Melton with gunshot wounds called for help.

Metro police weren't quickly accessible for input late Monday night with respect to assertions that Melton had debilitated Quackenbush's life.

"There's no doubt that there was an argument and yelling between both parties", Aaron said.

Quackenbush, a mother of a five-year-old son, shot at Melton with her eyes closed, her father said.

Jesse Quackenbush was formerly a film and television writer, director and producer, according to his website.
