The Treasury Department has previously defended Mnuchin's trip as "official government travel" and denied that viewing the eclipse was the primary goal of the trip.
A Treasury Department spokesperson told CNN in a statement that Mnuchin made the request to ensure he had access to secure lines of communication when he and his new wife, Louise Linton, were traveling. The Washington Post reported Treasury Department Inspector General counsel Rich Delma is "reviewing the circumstances of the Secretary's August 21 flight... to determine whether all applicable travel, ethics, and appropriation laws and policies were observed".

According to the spokesman, Treasury officials withdrew the request after finding an alternative way to communicate about government matters securely.

Trump campaigned on the promise of cutting the corporate tax rate to 15%, but Mr Mnuchin said that the goal would be hard to achieve.
