The Apple Watch Series 3 isn't off to a good start

21 September 2017

"We have discovered that when Apple Watch Series 3 joins unauthenticated Wi-Fi networks without connectivity, it may at times prevent the watch from using cellular", Apple explained to The Verge.

Apple Watch Series 3 set to hit the market on Friday boasts the ability to connect directly to telecommunications networks to let users remain connected without a smartphone for phone calls, music and other functions.

When Apple announced its newest Apple Watch Series 3 earlier this month, the Cupertino giant made it clear that it wants its users to depend less on the iPhone when sporting the wearable. With a cellular or Wi-Fi connection, it can make/take calls, activate Siri, send texts and connect to the internet without pairing with an iPhone, as previous variants were required to. The Wall Street Journal reported similar issues with LTE, also across multiple watches.

The headlining feature of the Series 3 watch is LTE connectivity, and it doesn't work as it should - or in some cases, at all. In addition, it's launching an Apple Heart Study later this year with Stanford Medicine to identify irregular heart rhythms. If you use Global Positioning System on your new Apple Watch or the headline feature - making calls - the battery takes a real hit. The Watch has a tendency to connect to unknown WiFi networks instead of connecting to cellular.

That's despite the fact that reviewers have panned the smart watch's poor battery life while making calls over cellular, with most testers finding their battery almost drained after only an hour. Many experienced about half a day of battery life from the watch when using the cell connection heavily. Additionally, the spokesperson stated that Apple is working on a fix. The addition of cellular LTE connectivity is the biggest change to the smartwatch.

Analysts say iPhone 8 demand has been muted by Apple's premium iPhone X, which will arrive in stores on November 3 after a week of preorders starting October 27. "People won't know you're calling them from your watch if you don't tell them".
