Jurgen Klopp admits he wanted to sign Romelu Lukaku over the summer

"As a fan, I am looking forward to watching them in those games because I think they can bounce back".

Carragher said: "I don't think that player is there now, whether that's due to injuries or not playing enough. I am a big, big believer in this manager".

"I can not wait for those two games because, watching Liverpool since Jurgen has come in, they are the games where Liverpool seem to prove everyone wrong and put in top-class performances", said the former England captain, now coach of the Reds' academy side. It is still Christmas for our families but not for us - we are used to it.

On New Year's Eve 2016 they hosted Manchester City at 5.30pm before heading to Sunderland for a 3pm start on January 2. He was by some distance Klopp's most unsafe player and produced his goal from a nothing situation.

Which is no consolation to Klopp. "We had no chance for Lukaku", Klopp added.

"If they really want to bring supporters on the street, and at night, if they really want to bring all the people who work for television away from home and at night, then we are the last ones in the row to say something about this".

"A lot of that will depend on his form".

It leaves them seven points off the pace set by both Manchester clubs but Gerrard, the club's current under-18s coach, believes that could change quickly when the Premier League resumes with the visit of United on October 14.

The last one, at the beginning of September, certainly did not, as Liverpool had just thumped Arsenal 4-0 at Anfield to conclude what had been a very encouraging August.

At the back things are a bit more questionable with Jurgen Klopp unable to decide on his best goalkeeper whilst his defence looks short of confidence as they manage to make at least one goal causing mistake a match.

"I am not interested in the criticism, it should not have any effect", he said. Does it mean the other teams should not try to fly also?

"For us, the market was not really there".
