Chicago Man Arrested For Vandalizing Christopher Columbus Statue

10 October 2017

Gonzales says many Native American groups use the day to celebrate indigenous people and their contributions to society.

"Columbus was controversial and he had his dark side, as many figures in history, but taking the statue down will cause a lot of division", Albanese said. When the witness confronted them, the suspects tried to ride away on bicycles. If not, then both Christopher Columbus and the Native Americans would fall short of our present measures. Salt Lake City officials declared Tuesday that they would keep Columbus Day but observe Indigenous Peoples Day on the same day. But in 2016 Denver's council unanimously approved a proposal to designate the same day as Indigenous Peoples Day.

Since its national acceptance by order of President Franklin D. Roosevelt 32 years later, United States citizens have seized the day as a chance to reflect on their heritage.

If you ask a New Yorker which monuments symbolize an immigrants introduction to this country, they'll quickly note two famous statues: the Statue of Liberty in New York Harbor, and the statue of Columbus atop the landmark circle that bears his name.

In 1992, Berkeley, Calif., declared October 12 as "Day of Solidarity with Indigenous People" and promoted programs in schools and museums on Native American culture.

The (Oct. 2) action by the Moscow City Council to replace Columbus Day with a new holiday, Indigenous Peoples Day, is disappointing and sad. I'm 58 years old now, so a long time.

Similarly, many places have retooled Columbus Day to still mark the date without honoring the man. On the eve of the holiday honoring the famous Italian, many local Italians stressed that changing Columbus Day is an attack on their heritage. Some have even taken to celebrating "Indigenous People's Day" on Columbus Day.

Hunter Sagaskie, a Native American Programs peer adviser, also thinks the national holiday is inappropriate. Three states - Alaska, Minnesota and Vermont - have changed the holiday.

"We gather during a teachable moment to discuss the ongoing impacts of that legacy and to commit ourselves to reversing them", the group said.

The Christopher Columbus Italian Society owns the statue, but the land belongs to the city.

"Burying history is the worst way", Brophy said.

"As we reflect on the adventurers throughout history who charted new courses and sought new heights, let us remember the communities who suffered, and let us pay tribute to our heritage and embrace the multiculturalism that defines the American experience".
