Never Said It Was Lionel Messi Team - Mauricio Pochettino Blasts Pep Guardiola

14 October 2017

Pochettino is annoyed that Guardiola recently described Spurs as "the Harry Kane team" after citing Tottenham, Chelsea and Manchester United as City's main rivals for the Premier League title.

Pep Guardiola has denied being disrespectful to Tottenham.

"We saw again this week the Harry Kane team scores every day two or three goals", Guardiola said following the win on London at the end of September.

"He (Winks) was very calm - it did not surprise us because we know him very well and how he is", said Pochettino. "When it's exciting after an fantastic victory against Chelsea, sometimes [he] can struggle to keep his position and be a gentleman", Pochettino said. I think everyone deserves to be recognised as part of the success of the team.

"Many people took his words as very sad and disrespectful to the club".

Guardiola, whose side are top of the Premier League ahead of Saturday's game against Stoke City, said he has always been quick to give credit to Tottenham, who finished second last season, one place above City. "It wasn't disrespectful for myself".

Guardiola added that "maybe I should have said Pochettino's team when I said Harry Kane's team".

"I think Mauricio, for the times we've met each other and the times I spoke with him. maybe my English is not quite well". But if you're a manager, you must show more - be above this type of comment.

"I think Mauricio made a mistake". It's sad and it's not right in football. "Today we want to show respect, fair play and everything".

The Catalan was perplexed by Pochettino's public rebuke, shaking his head when asked to respond to his former Espanyol foe and pointing towards the dozens of occasions he praised Tottenham last season.

"He has not called me yet".

"It's hard to understand because he was part of the big success in Barcelona when it was Messi at his best", Pochettino said at a press conference. "I am sure I will reply", the 45-year-old concluded.
