The President waited 12 days to comment on the soldiers' deaths before being asked about his silence at a Rose Garden news conference last Monday.

Myeshia Johnson, the widow of Sgt. According to Wilson, who is a family friend of the Johnsons, the president told Johnson, "He knew what he signed up for, but when it happens it hurts anyway".

Mr Trump last week accused Ms Wilson of fabricating what he said during the call, tweeting that he had "proof" that this was the case.

Johnson, who is expecting a daughter this January, said she's still waiting for answers regarding the circumstances of her husband's death.

And when he did on Tuesday, Rep. Frederica Wilson said tht the president was disrespectful during a phone call he made to Johnson's widow; Wilson was on the phone when Trump called and said that Sgt. Johnson "knew what he signed up for, but I guess it still hurt". "La David Johnson, and spoke his name from beginning, without hesitation!"

But Johnson offered a different version. "It made me cry because I was very angry at the tone of his voice and how he said it", she said. He's out there fighting for our country, why can't you remember his name?.

The conflict drew criticism from Sen.

"As we say in the South: all hat, no cattle", Mrs Sanders said of Ms Wilson, an African-American who is known for wearing brightly coloured cowboy hats. "He couldn't remember m husband's name", Johnson told host George Stephanopoulos. "The only way he remembered my husband's name because he told me he had my husband's report in front of him and that's when he actually said La David". She said his phone call made "me cry even worse".

The women of the Congressional Black Caucus on Sunday demanded that White House chief of staff John Kelly apologize for his attack on Rep. Frederica Wilson (D-FL).

In defending himself, Mr Trump erroneously accused former presidents of failing to call military families whose loved ones were killed in action.

There are now no plans for the administration to reach out to Sgt. Johnson's family again, a White House official said.

But a video of Ms Wilson's nine-minute speech at the 2015 event, posted by the Sun-Sentinel of Fort Lauderdale, shows that she spoke exclusively about her efforts to get the building named after two fallen Federal Bureau of Investigation agents, praised the agents for their service and thanked colleagues in Congress from both parties.
