Okafor's option not being picked up by Sixers

02 November 2017

After falling completely out of the young Philadelphia 76ers rotation, and after the team declined to pick up the fourth year option on his contract, Jahlil Okafor told Philadelphia's local media that he would like to either be traded or bought out.

Earlier this week, Philadelphia chose to not pick up the fourth-year, $6.3 million option on Okafor's rookie deal, after having tried to trade him for some time.

With Embiid out for the entirety of the 2015-16 season, Okafor was the leading scorer on a 10-win Sixers team as a rookie, averaging 17.5 points a game. However, his minutes and role has continued to decrease and this season he has played in just one game - at Toronto - where Joel Embiid did not play. "I want to be on the court, that's pretty much it". The 76ers just need to find the team willing to take the risk and add the former Duke standout.

The Bulls have been linked to Okafor in the past as the big man reportedly preferred to be traded to Chicago if anywhere. "I want the team to do great things, but at the same time I want to play". Anthony Bennett, who was selected first overall in 2013 and Hasheem Thabeet, selected second overall in 2009, are the other first-round picks inside the top three that did not have their fourth-year options exercised. "Honestly, I didn't want them to pick up my option". I know a buyout is one of the options where I get an opportunity to play elsewhere and to get on the court. According to Stein, Okafor may push for the buyout since he will now be an unrestricted free agent next summer.

Okafor also believes that the team waited too long to try and move him in a trade. In fact, they've reportedly been exploring trades since last season.

It's been two weeks since the National Basketball Association season tipped off, so it's about time we get another story about a potential Jahlil Okafor-Philadelphia 76ers divorce, and reports of the Boston Celtics being interested in the big man's services.
