Hodges said Paul's injuries were minor and did not require transport to a hospital.

Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., spoke to supporters, August 11, in Hebron, Ky.

"Senator Paul and Kelley appreciate everyone's thoughts and well wishes and he will be back fighting for liberty in the Senate soon", Stafford said in his statement Sunday. "He's in some pain, but he's going to be fine", Robert Porter, Pual's friend said and added that Paul's come back to Washington will be a "game-time decision" but Paul is preparing to turn to work at some time in the following days. He has lung contusions, or bruises, caused by the broken ribs, and his recovery could last several months, his office said.

At one point, Boucher was a practicing physician, even working alongside Paul, according to his lawyer. He was released on Saturday after posting a $7,500 bond, Captain Chip Olney of the facility said by phone.

According to online records from the county jail, Boucher was released on a $7,500 bond on Saturday after spending almost 24 hours in the facility.

Voter records from March 2017 show Boucher registered as a Democrat. Although the alleged perpetrator, Rene Boucher, 59, is reportedly a registered Democrat, investigators can not determine if the crime was politically motivated.

The state police investigation remains open and active and the formal police report on the incident has not yet been filed with county officials, Hodges said.
