Google now serves up wait times at restaurants, adding grocery stores soon

To see wait times, search a restaurant on Google, and scroll down to the Popular Times section of the page, which will show the estimated wait time at that moment.

Diners will soon have a new tool to balance hunger and patience when Google adds a new feature to help dodge long wait times at popular NY restaurants. For example, anyone trying to grocery shop at Whole Foods early this Tuesday morning are in luck.

As for where the data comes from, Google notes that wait time estimates are based on anonymized historical data, much like how it calculates popular times for millions of businesses beyond just restaurants. But unlike Google, NoWait also lets you put your name on the list for those restaurants that don't take reservations. Google is adding new detail with information about actual wait times and projected wait times to help hungry consumers plan their visits for a bite to eat.

This particular feature has been a nice addition for Google Search, and with the inclusion of restaurants should go a long way to helping visitors. The feature will be deployed in Google Maps soon, too. Like the popular times feature, Google is algorithmically calculating its estimates based on data gathered from the millions of people who've enabled location tracking on their phones.
