Skyview High School thanks local veterans with a special assembly

Dean said OH is home to more than 800,000 veterans, and encouraged students and others in attendance at the event to honor and respect those who have served.

Students at Spring Mills Middle School wave flags during the school's "Veteran's Assembly".

West Aurora High School has an Air Force Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps program that has about 170 cadets, who took part in putting the Veterans Day assembly together.

"As educators, we are fortunate to have such a strong veteran presence in Howard County", said Martirano in a statement.

"I didn't know who to pray to", she said.

The event is sponsored by the Custer American Legion but it's the Custer High School Student Council who organize this district wide event.

Staley High School has held the event every year since their opening in 2008.

Wheat Middle School will host its annual Veterans Day Luncheon in the campus library, with students given the opportunity to invite a veteran.

"We have many active-duty and veteran families in our school community", Bruce said. "We couldn't have done a lot of this without their support".

Melonas said each year, students and staff create an "honor wall" as a tribute to veterans.

"We're out here in the freezing cold just to give back", Staley senior Joseph Ramos said. "I hope for the kids seeing us today that this is the closest they will ever get to experiencing war".
