Facing Historic Reddit Backlash, EA Cuts Cost of Star Wars Hero Unlocks

14 November 2017

The above response from EA's Star Wars Battlefront 2 community management team now sits at 440,000+ downvotes, well and above the most disavowed, disagreed-upon comment in Reddit history. "Based on what we've seen in the trial, this amount will make earning these heroes an achievement, but one that will be accessible for all players". Darth Vader, Luke Skywalker, Chewbacca, Princess Leia, Emperor Palpatine, and Iden Versio found themselves behind a paywall that would have cost players tens of thousands of credits per hero. There's been a lot of discussion around the amount of in-game credits (and time) it takes to unlock some of our heroes, especially Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader.

Star Wars Battlefront II isn't officially out until November 17, and yet it's already earning awards... DLC is game content that is not sold with the game but which players can purchase for extra money after the game's release. More information on that AMA will be coming down the pipeline shortly, but for now, head down to the comments section and let us know if this change is enough to get you to reconsider your stance on Battlefront 2. As reported by Forbes, critics who attended the Battlefront 2 event were playing a build of the game in which the prices for hero unlocks had been lowered.

If you head over to the Collection tab of the Star Wars Battlefront 2 main menu, you'll be able to see all the Heroes and Villains you now have unlocked, but you'll also be able to see some that are not yet unlocked, and can only be obtained through spending a certain amount of Credits. PEDESTRIAN.TV Tech Editor Matt Hopkins wrote "most games these days include some kind of loot system, but the majority are for aesthetic enhancements only". So mad, in fact, that when an EA representative jumped into the Reddit thread to allay people's fears, the rep's comment became the most downvoted in Reddit's history, getting over 436,000 downvotes in 24 hours as of this writing.

We appreciate the candid feedback, and the passion the community has put forth around the current topics here on Reddit, our forums and across numerous social media outlets.

The post goes on to make it clear that the dev team plans to continue tweaking the game over time, making a point of celebrating how quickly a live game like Battlefront II can be updated to respond to player feedback.

Of course, this won't be the last that we hear of Battlefront 2's loot boxes. Listening, and providing choices in how you play, will always be our principle with Star Wars Battlefront II. For those of you that don't want to have anything to do with Origin, trials, or EA at this moment, you still may want to have a look at the videos we recorded below.
