Hiway 80 mission hosts pre-Thanksgiving meal

CEO Dan Sieburg says crews were able to power through it and get things done as scheduled, something long-time clients are thankful for.

"We just want to be the hands and feet of Jesus to these people", Connell said.

Over 200 volunteers with the Ventura County Rescue Mission will be serving up approximately 1,000 traditional Thanksgiving meals on Thanksgiving Day. In all, around 500 people have been working for the last few weeks to make this year's deliveries possible.

Everything served at the meal was donated by area individuals and groups, or bought with cash donations.

"They actually cook our turkeys for us", explained Stuart Harper, Executive Director of the Buffalo City Mission. "It's quite an effort".

"It's all about having a good spirit and thinking about the holidays and what it would mean for somebody else", said Andrew Washington, who has been enjoying Thanksgiving at the Rescue Mission for many years.

For Lisa Peterson, this is her first Thanksgiving volunteering with the Union Gospel Mission's satellite meal service that brings the feast to those in need in their home surroundings.

"We know behind the scenes, it's God providing what we need through these people", said Steve Olivo of the Hope Rescue Mission. Her family loves what she does as well, she said, and it is their tradition that Thanksgiving is done at the Center.

Felicia Adame and her family were one of about 100 families selected to receive meals.
