Small Business Saturday encourages shopping local

25 November 2017

There's a mood that comes with the holiday season, and it often spurs a shopping spree. Everyone wants businesses to grow and for people to be employed.

Oakland County plans to host a contest this year dubbed Small Business Saturday to Saturday, which runs November 25-Dec.

But everyone can embrace tomorrow, Small Business Saturday. By shopping "small", you're doing more than investing in your community.

"I don't know of a better place if you're wanting to support small business than downtown Lawrence", said Moore, who co-owns Delaney and Loew with her husband, Bradly Moore. "You are literally paying to increase your quality of life". Participating Chamber member businesses include Cedartown's Holmes for Her, Holmes Clothing, Bussey's Florist and Gifts, and Rockmart's The Perch on Marble, Morgan ACE Hardware, Now and Then, and Smith & Lockwood.

"Even though we are growing and the landscape is changing, Summerville is all about shopping local", he said.

"We need the neighborhood's help, whichever neighborhood you're in, to keep all of us alive in small stores", she said. "These businesses are chugging along and events like this make their engines go". "You're supporting your neighbors and friends".

Who's in on Small Business Saturday?

For some local Wilmington businesses, this Saturday's deals will bring in their biggest sales of the year.

American Express recognizes the importance of a strong, financially stable community.

It is estimated more than 71 million people will shop on Saturday as they finish their holiday lists.

"There's a lot more attention on it".

"Not only are you supporting these businesses, you are helping these people to survive in a pretty tough environment these days ..."

She also added that the day is a flawless opportunity for shoppers to learn more about Shawnee Chamber business members and other area businesses. "So this is all the retail joining together to say, 'We have it in town, and you can help our economy, too'". But many will give deals when they can. However, Skaare would disagree with that.

"We have been exceeding (sales) each month year to date, especially since there are no other Radio Shacks nearby anymore", Via said. There are a variety of specialty shops.

Do your homework. Know who the black retailers are in your area. "Sometimes it is about more than dollars and cents".

And though Summerville is rapidly becoming immersed in the ever-expanding Charleston metro market with new industries and housing developments all around it, Via said one thing has remained constant. "Walk around our downtown and other shopping areas in Williston and make it an experience".
