Two years later, Pruitt joined the Tide coaching staff as a graduate assistant. Pruitt, who was not retained when Kirby Smart took over Georgia's football program in 2016, has been Alabama's defensive coordinator the past two seasons. The Crimson Tide are back in the College Football Playoff this year too. Alabama will meet Clemson in the Sugar Bowl in one national semifinal game on January 1. If Alabama wins, it will move on to the College Football Playoff National Championship Game on January 8.

The hiring of Pruitt wraps up a 25-day coaching search that brought national embarrassment following the Greg Schiano fiasco.

Sources say the contract is believed to around $4 million annually and Pruitt will be introduced later this afternoon in a formal press conference. Pruitt spent time as the director of player development from 2007-2009.

"Six days ago, I mentioned several attributes that I sought to find in the next leader of our football program, and Coach Pruitt meets all criteria". Over the years, Pruitt has managed to land an all-star list of commitments for Alabama, Georgia and Florida State from the likes of RB Derrick Henry, RB T.J. Yeldon, DB Jalen Ramsey, LB Dylan Moses, DE Lorenzo Carter, LB Mack Wilson, LB Reggie Ragland, LB Roquan Smith, LB Ryan Anderson, LB C.J. Mosley and OL Alphonse Taylor.

The 43-year-old is widely recognized as an excellent recruiter and was a Broyles Award finalist in 2016. Pruitt is now the fifth-highest paid assistant in the country, making $1.3 million a year. The Tide are the fourth seed this year. "I see him getting talent to Tennessee".
