LG Display creates 88 inch 8K OLED

02 January 2018

If this turns out to be true, then it will be the first time that LG will be launching one of the largest and the highest-resolution OLED panel in the market at the moment.

Samsung used to be a contender in this arena, as well, but the South Korean giant has since shifted its focus on QLED display. With that measurement, LG still won't beat the world's biggest display in a TV, but it definitely seats atop in terms of largest OLED panel.

LG maintained that it's actually easier to come up with 8K resolution for an OLED display than a liquid crystal display (LCD) panel. Of course, one of the challenges for 8K resolution displays will be finding content which is shot at the resolution, considering 4K and HDR formats are just starting to take off.

Having said that, we have few details about the TV right now but we are expecting more information to be shared during the launch event.

The release continued, "The 33 million self-emissive OLED pixels in each 8K OLED display create the more delicate images and unmatched picture quality that are already highly regarded in the UHD TV industry". Currently, the 4K resolution TV model is offered by brands like LG Electronics, Sony, and Panasonic but all these companies use disPlays manufactured by LG Display. LG's 77-inch TV costs a whopping $20,000.

"OLED is clearly a next-generation technology leader and for this reason, LG Display is accelerating its research and development into OLED so that we can provide differentiated products to customers and markets", Kang added. But again a TV with an 8K resolution is simply on another level.

LG is set to showcase the tech product at CES 2018, which is when companies from all over the world attend to one-up each other with their own offerings. It has also been sliding itself into mobile OLED panels which is controlled by Samsung. The recent development in this scenario is the construction of a manufacturing plant in China's Guangzhou city.
