'Raising Iran unrest at United Nations a blunder'

Under its charter, the United Nations empowers the council to "investigate any dispute, or any situation which might lead to worldwide friction".

The Netherlands hoped the meeting would "work as a preventive measure to avoid further escalation of violence", Dutch Ambassador Karel van Oosterom said.

At Friday rallies in Iran, pro-government demonstrators chanted "Death to America" and "Death to Israel".

Residents contacted by Reuters in various cities on Friday said the protests had shown sign of abating, after the government intensified a crackdown on protesters by dispatching Revolutionary Guards forces to several provinces.

Iran's prosecutor general, Mohammad Jafar Montazeri, alleged Thursday that an American CIA official was the "main designer" of the demonstrations.

Iran is not a member of the Security Council but its ambassador, Gholamali Khoshroo, was invited to participate. The CIA declined to comment. "Another FP [foreign policy] blunder for the Trump administration".

He said Iran had already violated the 2015 deal, which imposed curbs on Iran's nuclear capability in return for easing worldwide embargoes. He refused this past fall to certify Iran's compliance with the pact and said the benefits to Iran were disproportionate to the concessions it made.

"These sanctions target key entities involved in Iran's ballistic missile program, which the Iranian regime prioritizes over the economic well-being of the Iranian people", Mnuchin said.
