Seahawks to play road game in London against Raiders

12 January 2018

The NFL's 2018 London slate includes three playoff teams, a perennial contender, and two potential risers next season.

The move to play three games instead of four at just Tottenham's stadium coincides with the team's ambitions to become home to a UK-based National Football League team. The Raiders and Chargers are awaiting construction of new stadiums, and the Jaguars have a long-term agreement to play in London to combat low local revenues in Jacksonville.

The Raiders, Jaguars and Chargers will be considered the home team in their respective games in London. Pitted against Cincinnati (3-4), the Redskins (4-3) played the Bengals to a penalty-strewn, mistake-filled tie in a game that lasted almost four hours.

The NFL's International Series rolls on in 2018 with another series of games taking place in London. With the three London games solidified, the only remaining slots are for the one game in Mexico.

The Seahawks are one of six teams that have yet to play across the pond, and NFL UK's managing director has expressed a desire to get those teams over there, according to The News Tribune. "We will play an additional game at Tottenham in a future season, over and above the planned two per year, to make up for this". However, it should be noted why four of these teams are playing games on worldwide soil in 2018.

The NFL and Spurs announced in 2015 that games would be held annually at the football club's new stadium, with rumours also of a London based franchise. The Jaguars, on the other hand, have one of the league's best defences.

"There was a possibility of a fourth game but we wanted to focus on back-to-back-to-back games and quality games", he said.

The NFL is cutting back from four games to three but will stage all of the match-ups in consecutive weekends for the first time as it continues to experiment with operational logistics in the country. Kick-off times and the order of the games at Wembley will be announced at a later date.
