India likely to revive missile deal with Israel

14 January 2018

PM Modi will break protocol to receive Benjamin Netanyahu and his wife Sara, at the airport on Sunday afternoon, beginning a prime ministerial visit from Israel 15 years since Ariel Sharon came here in 2003. Over time, he continued, he is expecting a change in India's voting on issues relating to Israel at global forums. Meanwhile, Israel on Friday also indicated it was disappointed with the recent move of the Indian Government to vote in favour of a United Nations resolution opposing the decision of the U.S. to recognise Jerusalem as Israel's Capital but said ties were too strong to be affected by one decision. The strategic and defence components have been a strong part of India-Israel relations for some time. Answering a question from an Indian journalist, Netanyahu said, "We would have preferred another vote, to be frank".

The Indian Army and the government are discussing ways to revive a $500 million order to buy Spike anti-tank guided missiles from Israel's state-owned defense contractor Rafael, according to military chief Bipin Rawat. "My visit to India is the other one", Netanyahu said on Wednesday.

In Gujarat, the two Prime Ministers will visit the Center of Excellence in Vadrad and inaugurate a Center of Excellence for date palms in Bhuj via video conference. Netanyahu is going to spend a day in PM Modi's home state on 17 January. The visit comes merely six months after PM Modi visited the Jewish state, becoming the first Indian premier to do so.
