Hyundai breathes new life into quirky Veloster coupe

16 January 2018

Hyundai described the design tweaks like this, "Much of the redesign is derived from enhanced proportions and volume; the new shape clearly conveys focused dynamic performance, even standing still". Here was an odd, not very useful hatchback that wasn't very good to drive from a brand that desperately needed crossovers and SUVs. Hyundai's first US market N model leverages the outstanding, new-for-2019 Veloster platform, showcasing an even higher level of performance appealing to the most discerning of automotive enthusiasts.

While the design and powertrain changes are minor, Hyundai made bigger improvements to the Veloster's feature set.

Throughout its life, Hyundai's Veloster has primarily traded on its funkiness.

And the Veloster is more than muscle. There's also an available darkened rooftop. Its stance is more muscular, with higher-volume fenders and wheel arches for a more planted appearance.

After taking a year-long sabbatical, the 2019 Veloster is back, and it's wearing a fresh new look at today's Detroit Auto Show. Blue Link LTE-powered connectivity is also an available option on the sporty hatchback.

The 2019 model is a mere 0.4 inches wider than last year's vehicle, while the overall length increases from 166.1 to 166.9 inches, with all the extra auto sitting in the front overhang. A full suite of active safety systems is available-adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, automatic high beams, and active lane control are all available.

Most of all, however, the work done on the roofline - lower and more rakish, with a blacked-out performance version available - is among the most notable changes. It also gives the Veloster its coupe-esque styling.

Powering the front wheels is the "Nu" 2.0-litre four-pot mill, which offers 110kW and 179Nm in base atmospheric form, the output processed by a six-speed manual or automatic transmission.

A higher powered variant of the auto the Turbo comes with a direct-injected 1.6-litre Gamma four that delivers 201 hp and 195 lb-ft of torque. Torque is 195 lb-ft. from 1,500-4,500 rpm; an over-boost function bumps that up to 202 lb-ft. for brief periods. The 2.0L is mated to a six-speed manual transmission with downshift rev-matching capability that sends the power to the front wheels. The Veloster Turbo still has twin center exhaust tips, but they look tamer. Is it time for the Veloster N? .

No matter the trim, each Veloster model will come equipped with Torque Vectoring Control, which will aim to "improve dynamic cornering during more enthusiastic driving".

"When combined with Hyundai's outstanding value and efficiency, the new Veloster is sure to attract a progressive new group of enthusiast buyers".

So forget the base model. Overseas, it has the i30 N, which we don't get in the US.
