Caroline Wozniacki delighted after winning her first Grand Slam title in Australia

28 January 2018

Wozniacki won her first grand slam title when the Dane beat Simona Halep 7-6 (7-2) 3-6 6-4 in an epic Australian Open final Saturday that featured the world's two highest ranked players. Today is a dream come true.

It was clear that the top seed, who will lose her world No. 1 ranking to the Dane on Monday, was struggling physically during the contest, in what's been a gruelling fortnight.

Both players put up a great fight as each of them was aiming for the first Grand Slam title after two lost finals.

Sensing her moment as Halep served for survival, Wozniacki fired a searing forehand victor to edge a 16-shot rally for match point and then held on grimly until the Romanian finally buckled.

The Daphne Akhurst Memorial Cup sat on the table beside Wozniacki at her post-match press conference. It's fine. I cried, but now I'm smiling, ' she said in her post-match press conference.

"Last but not least, I want to thank my dad who has been there since I was seven".

She said: "I'd been through a lot of injuries at that point".

"But I think for the a year ago and a half, I've proved that I can beat anyone out there on court". It's been a great tournament to me. I didn't want to think too much about how it would feel to win before the match because that's like in case I don't, it's going to hurt even more.

"Is just a tennis match in the end". "It's a very emotional moment".

However, the Romanian was unable to maintain momentum and Wozniacki duly reeled off three games in succession, securing victory on her first match point when Halep netted. Wozniacki took the first set by 7-6 to take a lead, but Halep made a strong comeback in the second set winning it by a score of 6-3. Regardless of what happens now, I've done my best.

Both players needed medical attention during the brutal encounter in energy-sapping conditions so hot there was a 10-minute "extreme heat" break between second and third sets.

"I know that today, it's a tough day. I think both of us were very exhausted in the end". "But now I'm just so happy to have the trophy". She admitted that she stopped taking risks in her Roland Garros stumble in 2017, and that she still had thoughts about that match. But, yeah, I'm really sad I couldn't win it.

Unfortunately, she hasn't yet elaborated on which casino game specifically she has taken to, but perhaps with her practice at tossing the ball for the serve, maybe dice game craps was the first choice?

Wozniacki started the stronger and broke Halep's opening service game with the early evening temperature still above 30 Celsius (86 Farenheit).
