Karnataka bandh: Offices, malls, movie halls shut over security concerns bengaluru

The outfits are demanding that Prime Minister Narendra Modi intervenes in the dispute between Goa and Karnataka. Even, The Several private schools and state government offices are expected to be shut tomorrow following the bandh. Police had made elaborate security arrangements across the state to ensure that no untoward incident occurs.

Public transport was out of the roads with not even a single KSRTC bus coming out of the depots, while nearly all autorickshaws also did not ply leaving commuters in great difficulty.

Among the Kannada organisations who called for the bandh, differences have cropped up. This will help in augmenting the drinking water supply to Hubballi-Dharwad and districts of Belagavi and Gadag. The groups are protesting against the non-implementation of the Kalasa-Banduri dam project which would divert water from the Mahadayi river to districts in north Karnataka facing acute water shortage.

Various pro-Kannada organisations led by the Karnataka Rakshana Vedike and Vatal Nagaraj, leader of Kannada Chalavali Vatal Paksha (KCVP) are leading the bandh all over the state.

Another protest has been called for 4 February. On Thursday BJP chief Amit Shah was scheduled to address a rally in Mysuru in the culmination of the party's state-wide Parivartana rally. "It is to show to Siddaramaiah who is playing politics, that we also know how to play politics as a national party.It is also with an intention to resolve the Mahadayi river water dispute".

The Mahaydai Water Disputes Tribunal, headed by J.N. Panchal, on July 28, 2016 rejected the state's petition for releasing the river water, citing various grounds, including ecological damage the twin canal projects may cause. It is no secret that Parrikar heads a coalition government in Goa and is in no position to initiate talks with Karnataka without taking the BJP's allies into confidence.

As the date for assembly elections in Karnataka draws closer, both the Congress and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) are using state-wide bandhs to settle political scores in the poll-bound state.

Now, BJP is also planning a district-specific shutdown during Congress president Rahul Gandhi's campaigns from February 10. However, these attempts to involve Modi have also not been successful.
