Ben Platt to star in new Netflix series from Ryan Murphy

06 February 2018

After releasing her Netflix concert film a year ago, Barbra Streisand may be heading back to the streaming site for a new Ryan Murphy series. The series will star Tony Award victor Ben Platt (Dear Evan Hanson) and is reportedly in negotiations to bring Academy Award winners Barbra Streisand (The Guilt Trip) and Gwyneth Paltrow (Avengers: Infinity War) on board as costars.

There will be several musical numbers in the show, which will showcase Platt's talents as well as Streisand's, and if that seems an odd fit for the series keep in mind the show hails from the same trio that created Glee. Netflix reportedly grabbed the show with a two-season, straight-to-series order, according to Deadline.

As is his tradition, Murphy will direct the pilot episode of The Politician with Streisand expected to go behind the camera for a few episodes, as well.

The package, which also drew interest from Hulu and Amazon, is produced by Fox 21 TV Studios and stems from Murphy's overall deal with 20th Century Fox Television. Platt is expected to flex his vocal chords and sing in the series.

This is the second new Netflix series for Murphy after Ratched, a prequel to the classic film One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, set to star frequent collaborator (and Emmy winner) Sarah Paulson. Ian Brennan (Glee co-creator) was brought onto the project by Murphy and Falchuck, and the three will likely share co-creator credits for the series.

The Politician joins a roster of Murphy's scripted originals that also includes Fox's recently renewed drama 911, FX anthologies American Horror Story, American Crime Story and Feud, plus ongoing drama Pose and Netflix's Ratched.
