CDC: Flu hospitalizations highest on record

06 February 2018

There's no such thing as a mild flu season, Dan Jernigan, director of the US Centers for Disease Control's influenza division, told reporters last month.

Their identities were not released.

On Wednesday, Rutgers students received an important reminder that it is not too late to vaccinate against the flu, in light of the the most serious influenza season in years. In a typical flu season, the system reports about five percent of people seeking care at doctor's offices, clinic and hospitals have flu-like symptoms.

The hope is to provide some additional protection and possibly reduce the spread of the virus and the length of the flu season. There have been almost 200 lab-confirmed cases of influenza as of February 2, the most since 2009.

But, the flu shot is relatively more effective for other strains circulating this year. So far health officials have documented 37 flu-related deaths in our state.

"Despite recent leadership changes, the CDC remains committed to our 24/7 mission to protect the health, safety and security of our nation", Schuchat said.

A recent update by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reveals that at least another 16 children were killed by the winter flu in the USA this past week, raising the nationwide number of pediatric deaths to 53 in 2018.

"Each year, the strains included in the vaccine are based on the flu activity across the world".

"We are.hearing from some health care providers that there are spot shortages of some antivirals used to treat the flu and flu tests; however, at this time, there is no nationwide shortage of these products".

"Being around so many people at school and at work makes me very nervous about getting the flu, so I am trying to do everything I can to make sure I don't".

There have been 11,683 laboratory confirmed influenza cases reported to the state Department of Health, and 2,221 residents hospitalized due to flu. Even still, physicians still suggest getting the flu shot if you have not done so already. Proper hand washing and covering your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze can help prevent the spread of influenza. If you go to the emergency room and you are not sick with the flu, you may catch it from people who do have it. That agency keeps up with flu data from across the country. "I'm feeling better, the doctor just recommended that I drink lots of water and get a good amount of sleep".

New Brunswick has seen 572 more cases of the flu so far this season than the same time a year ago, with 160 more hospitalizations and eight more deaths, Department of Health statistics show.

Thus, not all people suffering from the flu will be protected by the FMLA.

According to the CDC, influenza is widespread in 48 states, a drop of one state from the previous week with OR joining Hawaii in reporting lower activity levels.
