Colts hire Patriots OC McDaniels as head coach

He was part of all five of New England's Super Bowl titles since 2001.

It appears McDaniels' Colts coaching staff is taking shape, as Indy reportedly has contracts in place with three new assistants: defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus, offensive line coach (and former Patriots assistant) Dave DeGuglielmo and defensive line coach Mike Phair.

Though they likely had an unofficial agreement, the Colts couldn't announce McDaniels as the head coach until he fulfilled his duties with the New England Patriots. He was handed the reins of the Denver Broncos in 2009, but lasted less than two seasons. (Okay, maybe that Brady drop in Super Bowl 52 didn't work out, but you get the idea).

The Colts have a franchise quarterback, a ton of cap space, and the No. 3 pick in the 2018 NFL Draft. He has a good start with Colts quarterback Andrew Luck, assuming Luck is healthy.

Jerry Schuplinski began his coaching career as a high school head coach, then spent six seasons as the special teams coordinator and linebackers coach in college at Case Western Reserve.

The Colts need a head coach and the Patriots need clarity, and neither side has it officially. Once that business was taken care of - the Patriots fell 41-33 to the Philadelphia Eagles even though McDaniels' offense set a postseason record with 613 total yards - the Colts had their latest leader. Both Ballard and McDaniels have shown a willingness to make deals in order to maximize their number of picks. Louis Rams to be their offensive coordinator before returning to New England in 2012.

This basically confirms Belichick will be back coaching next season, and now the team needs to find a new offensive coordinator.

Some believe Belichick might walk away from the Patriots, but it sure doesn't seem like McDaniels would take the job if the Pats gig was about to become vacant.
