New features coming to PS4's operating system in big 5.50 update

07 February 2018

For those wanting to limit how much a PS4 is used, the new Play Time Management feature has been introduced, which is primarily intended for use with kids.

"If needed, the family manager/guardians can apply playtime restrictions to make sure that the child is only playing for a set amount of time or within set playable hours". To avoid saving woes or untimely quitting, the child will be notified during gameplay before playtime is over. On the PlayStation, users can even choose to automatically log their child out of their PS4 once they exceed the maximum playtime set by their parent.

There is also Library UI update that sees new tabs added with one being a "This PS4" and the other a Name/Avatar tab.

Hiding apps: This convenience allows the user to disappear certain apps they won't be using again, reducing menu clutter; think betas, trials or other demos.

Customize Tournament Team Pages with your own team logo or background via USB imports. Once the image has been imported from USB, users can zoom, crop and preview them.

HDTV Supersampling for PS4 Pro. If your PS Plus membership is expired, a PS Plus icon with a lock shows up next to your game so you know which games you can play if you re-subscribe.

The PS Plus tab will feature the games you have downloaded for free through the PS Plus monthly free game program.

As you can see 5.50 is, indeed, a major system software update.

The Friends tab in the Quick Menu now lets you quickly access specific friends, and it'll also show which of them are online.

Now on to the quick menu improvements. Music controls for Spotify, the media player and USB music player apps are all coming to the main menu.

PS4 has had support for both store themes and turning screenshots into custom backgrounds for a while now, so you were able to easily display pot-smoking grim reapers or sweet Uncharted 4 vistas as you wished.

One of the main changes with the PS4 5.50 update is that the game Library has now been divided into two different areas.

If your Notifications tab makes you feel like you're in a particularly bad episode of Hoarders, you'll be glad to know that update 5.5 will make it possible to permanently delete any and all old notifications. Sony describes it as: "Certain games already have the "supersampling" benefits as part of their "PS4 Pro Enhanced" feature set, but this new mode can enhance the experience for those games that don't already have the feature". "Please note performance will vary, as games are optimized differently to take advantage of the power of PS4 Pro".

Finally, Sony details the supersampling mode coming for PlayStation 4 Pro owners.
