One officer dead, two others shot while serving warrant near Atlanta

Sheriff McBrayer said one deputy is in serious condition and the other is in fair condition.

"The Locust Grove police officer died shortly after at the hospital".

But while trying to serve the warrant, an altercation broke out, according to the sheriff, and all three officers were shot.

He said officers had no motivation to accept when they arrived that the suspect would be savage, however it ended up noticeably clear that he wouldn't run with them readily. Both were transported to Atlanta Medical Center.

Sources tell FOX 5's Morse Diggs the warrant was for a failure-to-appear on a traffic citation.

Henry County Sheriff Keith McBrayer said it happened as the officers were serving an arrest warrant around 11 a.m.at a home in Locust Grove.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation said on its Twitter page Friday night that the suspect was 39-year-old Tierra Guthrie.

He and his wife Alex have one son and she is pregnant with their second child.

GBI spokeswoman Nelly Miles said the suspect's relatives were being notified before his name is released.

WSB-TV reported two of the law officers were flown away by helicopter while the third was carried by ambulance.

Yellow police tape cordoned off a section of one home's front yard. Locust Grove Elementary School, which was nearby, was put on lockdown during the response to the incident.
