India hopes to see Palestine becomes sovereign soon: PM

Palestinian President Rami Mahmoud Abbas described Modi's visit as "significant".

The two countries signed four agreements worth 41 million USA dollars in various sectors, including education, health, media and women economic empowerment.

Three agreements in the education sector worth U5 million, one MoU for procurement of equipment and machinery for the National Printing Press and one for construction of a centre for empowering women were signed.

Abbas said after their meeting that he remains committed to negotiations with Israel as the path toward Palestinian independence.

Even as Modi dramatically tightens India's ties with Israel, New Delhi has continued its longstanding support of the Palestinians in worldwide forums.

European leaders have criticized Trump's dramatic policy shift on Jerusalem, but appear unwilling to confront Washington over its handling of more than two decades of failed efforts to broker an Israeli-Palestinian partition deal. India recently voted for a resolution that criticised US's decision to move its embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. India and Palestine enjoy time-tested and close friendship driven by former long-standing support to the Palestinian cause.
