Three San Antonio Chefs Named as Beard Award Semifinalists

Taylor Petrehn is a semifinalist in the James Beard Foundation Restaurant and Chef awards for the second year in a row.

Vishwesh Bhatt, executive chef at Snackbar, was nominated for Best Chef: South.

The finalists will be announced in a few weeks, and the winners will be named at The James Beard Foundation Awards Gala at the Lyric Opera of Chicago on Monday, May 7, 2018.

Seven Metro Detroit chefs or restaurants were listed as semifinalists for the James Beard Foundation Awards, an esteemed group voted in by a 600-member panel of food experts from across the country.

Eight South Florida culinary professionals and restaurants made the first cut, with four chefs vying for the Best Chef: South award.

For the second year in a row Lisa Ludwinski of Detroit's Sister Pie, 8066 Kercheval, is an "Outstanding Baker" semifinalists.

Other familiar names include Belinda Leong and Michel Suas of San Francisco's B. Patisserie in the outstanding baker category, and San Francisco's Bar Agricole and Trick Dog for outstanding bar program. And, of course, in 2014 Adrian Miller took a top prize in the James Beard books competition for Soul Food: The Surprising Story of an American Cuisine One Plate at a Time. Eligible candidates must have been working as a chef for the past five years.

This is the first James Beard Award nod for Michael Corvino, who opened Corvino Supper Club & Tasting Room at 1830 Walnut St. less than a year ago.
