Central Michigan postpones game in wake of campus shooting

06 March 2018

A college student from southwest suburban Chicago allegedly fatally shot his parents on the campus of Central Michigan University on Friday and remains at large and is considered risky.

The university, in Mount Pleasant, identified the victims as James Eric Davis Sr., 48, and Diva Jeenen Davis, 47, the suspect's parents.

Davis Jr. was spotted in the north end of the university just past midnight, university officials said in a statement.

The couple was reportedly picking up their son from college for spring break on Friday morning when they were gunned down in his dormitory on the fourth floor of Campbell Hall.

Currently, more than 100 law enforcement officers from across MI are searching for Davis Jr., who was last seen leaving a residence hall on campus.

IL authorities have confirmed that one of the two victims of the Central Michigan University shooting was a police officer.

Bellwood Mayor Andre Harvey told reporters Friday evening that he grew up with James Davis Sr., who had been a family friend and a part-time police officer with the department for more than 20 years.

Klaus said Davis was seen wearing a dark hoodie following the shooting. The suspect is considered armed and risky.

The school says parents are being told to go to a local hotel in Mount Pleasant where staff would assist them. No other details were released.

Another wrote: "I'm on CMU's campus at work right now and just got a call that there was shots fired in the towers and they haven't said anything about having the suspect in custody or anyone being hurt just that there was gunfire and I'm pretty terrified!" In another tweet, the CMU Student Government Association advised the students to stay inside locked doors and warned them to not "walk around the campus".

On Thursday night, Klaus said Davis suffered what officers believed was a drug overdose or a bad reaction to drugs and he was taken to a hospital.

Mount Pleasant is about a 285-mile (460-kilometer) drive from the family's hometown of Plainfield, Illinois.

University officials revealed that Davis had been taken to a local hospital the previous night for a "drug-related incident" and was released about an hour before Friday morning's shooting.

Yeagley says when officers determined that person posed no threat, Davis said he was fine and was leaving campus Friday for spring break. Visitors also weren't being allowed to enter.

2 people were killed Friday after being shot at Central Michigan University. Law enforcement officers arrived at the scene and the suspect was taken into custody without any incident.
