Microsoft is ditching Windows 10 S for 'S Mode'

Microsoft even previous year offered a chance to all Windows 10 S users to upgrade to Windows 10 Pro for free. Microsoft is also enabling tabs in Mail, Calendar, OneNote, and MSN News Windows 10 apps, with the ability to have File Explorer running alongside a tabbed version of OneNote or Mail. That would have involved doing away with Windows 10 S as a separate iteration of Windows and Microsoft has now confirmed that it's going to do just that. Microsoft launched Windows 10 S past year as a standalone version of Windows, partly to provide a secure, manageable version of Windows to those schools. With Windows 10 S, Microsoft started pushing education PCs starting at $189.

Windows 10 S saw a limited release on Microsoft Surface Laptop and other budget laptops.

The two companies could make their browsers compatible with Windows 10 S if they create a Universal Windows Platform for the browsers and send those versions to the Windows Store.

The choice to move to a Windows 10 S mode in their competing devices was expected by many, but it's also muddying the waters and making it more hard to tell which Windows PCs are meant to capture the attention of an education market that is now enamored with Chromebooks.

There's some confusion over how users who receive "S Mode" will be able to unlock it and how much it will cost - with rumours ranging from Free to $49, but no firm acknowledgement of this has been made by Microsoft.

Recent estimates have stated that Chrome OS accounts for about 60% of the USA education market in grades K-12. The confirmation came from Microsoft VP Joe Belfiore on Twitter. This is exactly how the lightweight Chrome OS works, which also limits users to installing apps from Google's Chrome Web Store and Play Store only. "Next year 10S will be a "mode" of existing versions, not a distinct version. SO ..."
