Back in 2006, Trump was only a tabloid character turned reality TV star-and on these calls, he allegedly offered Daniels keys to a NY condo. Mr Trump has denied the affair occurred.

While Clifford's signature appears above "PP", Trump's does not appear above "DD", which Clifford argued last week invalidates the agreement.

"I think the American people deserve to hear from her and quite honestly, we don't understand why all of this effort is being undertaken to silence my client", attorney for Stormy Daniels Michael Avenatti declared.

Clifford alleged in the lawsuit that Trump was aware of the negotiations. It also threatens to erode the president's support among evangelical voters.

Stephanie Clifford, aka Stormy Daniels, is having a field day on Twitter with the many people who are insulting her now that she wants to speak out about an affair she says she had with President Donald Trump.

Cohen did not explain why he made the payment or say whether Trump was aware of it.

The complaint against the Trump campaign was filed by government watchdog group Common Cause. The group claims it is an illegal campaign contribution because of the size and objective of the payment.

Clifford's attorney, Michael Avenatti, sent Cohen a letter offering to wire $130,000 by Friday to an account designated by the President. Avenatti set a deadline of Tuesday for Cohen to respond.

If they accept, Ms Clifford could "speak openly and freely about her prior relationship with the president and the attempts to silence her and use and publish text messages, photos and videos relating to the president that she may have in her possession, all without fear of retribution or legal liability", the letter said.

She also hopes to allow the broadcast of her interview with 60 Minutes' Anderson Cooper.

Cohen and Rosen did not immediately respond Monday to requests for comment.

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee-Sanders said last week that "arbitration was won in the President's favour" regarding the case, according to CNN. It was the first time the White House had admitted the President was involved in any way with Clifford. Clifford is embroiled in a legal battle over whether a non-disclosure agreement she signed in October 2016 in return for $130,000 is valid.
