US House Republicans Say Probe Found No Collusion Between Russia, Trump

13 March 2018

"At the outset of the Russian Federation probe, both parties committed to a thorough investigation that would follow the facts wherever they lead", Rep. Adam Schiff of California, the committee's senior Democrat and a former federal prosecutor, said in a recent statement.

Committee Republicans say they agree with intelligence agencies that Russian Federation interfered with the election, but they don't agree that Russian Federation favored President Trump.

Ranking Member Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) said in a statement on behalf of committee Democrats that the two parties should have been able to issue a joint report because "the evidence is clear and overwhelming that the Intelligence Community Assessment was correct". The Democrats are expected to issue their own version with a different conclusion in the coming weeks. They say there are still people the committee needs to call to testify and claim the Republicans on the committee haven't effectively used their authority to get all pertinent information.

The GOP's conclusion comes as Special Counsel Robert Mueller's probe is ramping up its investigation of the Trump team's alleged effort to coordinate activities with Russian officials, even gathering evidence that an early 2017 meeting in they Seychelles was an effort to establish a backchannel to the Kremlin. In response, the president made a decision to confirm the news on Twitter. But Flynn was never brought before the House Intelligence Committee for questioning.

After a yearlong investigation, Texas Rep. Mike Conaway announced Monday that the committee has finished interviewing witnesses and will share the report with Democrats for the first time on Tuesday.

The summary of the committee report turned the focus to the Democrats.

Schiff and the rest of the committee Democrats have complained that committee Republicans have failed to force witnesses to answer questions, to subpoena documents or to even attempt to look into potential financial entanglements among Trump, his associates and Russian Federation.

The committee Republicans said they agreed that Russian Federation sought to influence the election by spreading propaganda and false news reports via social media.

"Putin and the Russian Government aspired to help President-elect Trump's election chances when possible by discrediting Secretary Clinton and publicly contrasting her unfavorably to him", that report reads. The president has repeatedly denied there was any collusion. Over the previous year, an investigation has been taking place, led by special counsel Robert Mueller, which has indicted multiple past and current associates of the president with their own link back to the Kremlin. He also indicated that witnesses who didn't cooperate with the committee, such as former White House chief strategist Steve Bannon, would likely be off the hook instead of facing contempt proceedings. Republicans "proved unwilling to subpoena documents like phone records, text messages, bank records, and other key records so that we might determine the truth about the most significant attack on our democratic institutions in history", he said.

Schiff, the committee's top Democrat, said on Sunday that the committee, which is not widely regarded as being at the spearhead of the investigation into Russian Federation and Trump, had uncovered "circumstantial evidence of collusion".
