Amazon Alexa calling and messaging comes to Fire, Android and iOS tablets

14 March 2018

"The blue indicator light on the Echo device remains on for a few seconds, letting you know that Alexa is active and ready for your next request", Amazon explained in a support note.

Several users have recently complained about digital assistant Alexa's random laughs and refusal to take commands from users.

The Amazon Alexa app not only offers Echo product owners the ability to make and receive calls or messages, but it provides additional functions for the Echo devices.

Android and iOS setup includes extra steps.

You can now use Amazon's Alexa voice assistant to place free video and voice calls to other Alexa users on tablets. The application is widely available for all the platforms and you can easily install it from a respective App Store and Play Store for iOS and Android devices respectively. Since Alexa recognizes your voice, when you say, "Alexa, call Mom", Alexa will call your mom.

Previously, anyone wanting to make calls or send messages needed an Echo device like the Echo Show or Echo Spot. All you have to do is to ask Alexa to get in touch; but that only applies to the Fire HD 10. Just go to the Apps menu from a respective Tablet and launch the Alexa app.

But if you are seriously creeped out by it - you could unplug the device until Amazon releases the fix for the glitch. Canada, Mexico, and the United States are now the only countries that have this new feature available as well.

What's more, Amazon's Drop In feature, which basically serves as a quick intercom feature, also works with tablets. You can easily make voice and video calls to any connected devices without disturbing the other one.
