Tiger Woods updates from the Arnold Palmer Invitational

16 March 2018

But Woods responded with birdies on three of the next four holes, sinking a four-footer at the par-5 fourth and a three-footer at the par-5 sixth to set the stage for his greatest putt of them all. But the number that he is fixated on now is neither his 79 PGA Tour victories nor his 14 major championships.

"I feel way more comfortable in the tournament setting", Woods said after his round.

After starting from the 10th, Woods birdied the 12th, 13th and 16th to reach the turn in 33, but looked to have undone most of his good work with a wild tee shot on the third hole which finished up entangled in a mesh fence and was deemed out of bounds.

His Valspar performance last week filled both golf fans and Woods with hope as the Masters, the first major of the year, nears next month. "My body doesn't really want to do this because it's cold, but just push through it and then as soon as I get to that tee the competitive juices start flying".

But Woods bounced back in trademark fashion with three birdies on the home stretch iced by a stunning 71-foot birdie putt he drained from off the green at the par-3 seventh.

"From the time I first won there, to the other times I won the Green Jacket".

"If I knew I'd tell you".

"No one's going to unseat his ability to do what he did on the golf course, what he can do mentally and how he can grind through stuff".

Stenson, who missed the cut last week after playing alongside Woods, fired nine birdies and a solitary bogey in his 64, with seven of the birdies coming in an eight-hole stretch from the ninth.

A record eight-time victor of the Palmer event, Woods sits three-under-par through nine holes and is tied atop the leaderboard with fellow American Bill Hurley. "But everyone says that, I'm not different", he said.

Reed, a five-time tour victor, said he would love to be paired with Woods in a late group on Sunday. "Just keep making incremental improvements and I think I've done that".
