Why the Vikings took a risk on Sheldon Richardson

19 March 2018

"It is what it is for my situation, but players after me have to decide what they want to do". This was the best opportunity, this was the best deal we came up with.

Sheldon Richardson's visit with the Minnesota Vikings continued into Friday morning with the NFL Network summarizing the trip as the team putting "a full court press" on Richardson to get him to sign before leaving. Undrafted free agent Tashawn Bower won a job in training camp and then received 10 plays and picked up one sack. Seattle declined to do that in its window to do so this month, because $14 million was far too expensive for them.

Richardson came to Seattle on September 1 as part of a trade with the New York Jets, a deal that included sending over fan-favorite Jermaine Kearse and a second-round pick. Based exclusively on ability and past production, Cousins is comfortably in the top half of National Football League starting quarterbacks, but there are probably 8-10 better players at the position. He didn't practice let alone play for Seattle all last season.

While few believed Brees would leave the Saints, New Orleans waited so long to offer him a new deal that, according to ESPN's Mike Triplette, at least one team was willing to pay Brees a fully guaranteed two-year deal worth a combined $60 million.

"Nothing new. Same kind of thing. I know how that goes", Keenum said, recalling when the Rams selected Jared Goff in 2016. Winfield will most likely get a medical redshirt for last season.

"Don't have much for you now".

A first-round pick out of Missouri in 2013, Richardson burst onto the scene by winning the defensive rookie of the year award that season. That was until Wagner's hamstring injury in December.

With Tom Johnson, a starter a year ago, and top reserve Shamar Stephen both free agents, the Vikings are looking for help on the interior defensive line.

"I do feel like [Patterson] can take me to the next level and redefine my hands and make those pressures turn into sacks", Richardson added. Spielman said Richardson's arrival means Johnson won't return. They traded Michael Bennett and waived Richard Sherman, Jeremy Lane and DeShawn Shead to save $19 million in cap room. He spent big on Patriots free agent left tackle Nate Solder, but that's the cost of doing business when teams like the Patriots, Browns and Texans were in pursuit.

Cousins was pleased to the see the Vikings pick Siemian as his backup on Wednesday. It got a potential game-changer in Richardson.

But not for the Seahawks.

On the Vikings, he will join fellow top free agent Kirk Cousins, who signed a three-year, $84 million deal with Minnesota on Thursday.

A sub-optimal swap, to be sure.
