05 April 2018

The prince announced in May that he was retiring from most public duties after decades of royal service.

Over the last week, Prince Philip's health has prevented him from attending traditional Maundy and Easter services at Windsor Castle's St. George's Chapel alongside Queen Elizabeth.

In his customary good humor, Philip joked to a well-wisher who said he was sorry the duke of Edinburgh was standing down shortly after the retirement announcement by responding, "Standing down?"

Philip retired from public life a year ago but has since appeared several times at royal engagements alongside the queen.

However, his health has been an ongoing issue since a year ago, when he was admitted to hospital in June for an infection.
