MI bows out in Frozen Four tourney

07 April 2018

University of MI freshman Dakota Raabe and the Wolverines hockey team advanced to the NCAA Frozen Four after defeating Boston University in the Northeast Regional Final, 6-3, on March 25. In the first game against Michigan Tech, Notre Dame needed an overtime goal from senior defenseman Jordan Gross to win 4-3 and advance to the second round, where they defeated Providence 2-1 with a goal from junior forward Dylan Malmquist with 27 seconds left in regulation.

They'll face off on Saturday night against the victor of the Michigan - Notre Dame game.

"I only have to make 3-4 key saves against a quality opponent and that's my job", Shepard said, sitting back in his stall after a postgame stretch with a wad of gum in his mouth and a towel around his neck.

And they squeezed into the NCAA tournament only after Ohio State lost to Notre Dame in the Big Ten tournament title game, setting off a string of fortuitous events. The UMD defense performed in the first period Thursday like it had at the West Regional two weeks prior in Sioux Falls with suffocating defense that kept attempted shots from turning to shots on goal. "And again we have 26 players on our team and those guys have all contributed this year".

"Honestly, it's just kind of a blank to me", Lavigne said after the game. He continued to skate driving around the defending player and threw the puck in front of the net for Evans to send to the back of the net with seconds remaining in the game. "I think a lot of people, when they talk about us, talk about how we lack that depth, but a goal coming from Mike Pastujov like that just shows that ... in the second half of the year we had all four lines going and that's what got us here". "So if they aren't playing each other, I'm a Bulldog fan", he said.

A power-play goal by Tanner Laczynski, Ohio State's top scorer, in the third changed the vibe in the building and forced the Bulldogs to spend the final 10 minutes holding onto the lead.

The game-winner was Evans' second of the night and 13th of the season. The men's basketball team had returned from its appearance Monday night in the NCAA National Championship game against Villanova in San Antonio. "We dug ourselves a hole, but I couldn't be more proud of my group".

"You gotta tip your cap to Duluth, but our guys felt we were on our heels right away", Ohio State coach Steve Rohlik said. I didn't think (Morrison) was going to pass. MI is one of the best offensive teams in the NCAA, so this was expected.

"I tried to get out there and make sure he wasn't going to put one in short side".

Something snapped for the Irish after they scored their first goal on a power play early in the second period.

The teams went to the second intermission tied at two, but that didn't last long into the third and final period.
