IPL: Roy powers in Delhi victory over Mumbai

15 April 2018

The Result: Mumbai Indians 7-194 (Suryakumar 53, Christian 2-35) lost to Delhi Daredevils 3-195 (Roy 91no, Krunal 2-21) by seven wickets with no balls to spare.

Opener Roy made a mockery of a listless Mumbai Indians bowling attack as he hammered six fours and as many sixes in his 53-ball knock to help Delhi overhaul the home team's 194/7 for their first win of the season. "The comeback was fantastic by the bowlers and hopefully we keep continuing doing the same things", said local lad Shreyas Iyer who scored a modest 20-ball 27 on the night but more importantly held fort at one end as Jason Roy (91*) steered the visitors to victory.

In a superb move, Mumbai Indians chose to bring Rohit Sharma back to the middle-order after he failed to impose himself in the first two games of the season. Windies opener Evin Lewis (48) finally came to his own and was part of a hundred run partnership with Yadav which personified carnage on the cricket field. Bowled. Krunal Pandya comes in. "With the recent T20 Mumbai Premier League success, I said let's take that challenge and responsibility and go ahead".

This annual feature had started in a small way by bringing in 300-400 school children in 2010 and over the last two seasons had swelled to around 18,000. Whereas, Delhi never had a chance of holding the trophy and is gunning to win the coveted title under veteran opener Gautam Gambhir's guidance.

But he couldn't connect the next three balls and somehow got bat on ball off the last to get the winning run. This is Mumbai Indians' fastest Fifty in the tournament.

The 19-year-old left-hander hit two sixes and a four off Rahul Tewatia as Mumbai garnered 19 runs from the over. Glenn Maxwell made a quick-fire 13 from six deliveries, but a brilliant outfield catch by Hardik Pandya got the better of the Aussie allrounder.

Yadav was unbeaten on 47 off 26 balls at the other end with the Mumbai total reading 102 for 1 after nine overs.

The team management will have high expectations from Aaron Finch, who missed the opening match against Delhi Daredevils and failed with the bat against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). Even so, suffering narrow defeats, Mumbai Indians might opt for Hardik Pandya which depends on his recovery for today's match. Suryakumar from Mumbai Indians is hitting the ball mercilessly hard. Delhi needed one run off the final ball and the Englishman connected it and completed the run to seal the victory along with Shreyas Iyer (27*) at the other end. Morris too had been costly with ball in both the games.
