Louis Arthur Charles: The British Royal Baby's Name Is Revealed

02 May 2018

While at an Anzac Day service in London on April 25 before the moniker was shared publicly, William chatted with other attendees and was heard hinting to one that his new son had a "strong name", the Daily Mail reported.

It hasn't yet been announced who will be Meghan's bridesmaids and page boys, but William and Catherine's oldest children, Prince George, four, and Princess Charlotte, two, are expected to form part of the wedding party.

Speaking after the announcement that the infant son of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge has been named Louis Arthur Charles, Professor Kate Williams said the decision was a tribute to Louis Mountbatten, as well as to Prince Charles and Prince Philip.

The public was shocked to find out the royal couple had chose to brand the baby "Louis" - an unexpected name for the bookies who had expected "Arthur" or "Alexander".

The name Louis, though perhaps unexpected, does, however, have a connection to the British royal family.

Kensington Palace declined to speculate on the significance of the name but Louis is also William's fourth name.

French and German in origin, it means "renowned warrior". The name "Charles" is, of course, in honor of the baby's grandfather, Prince Charles.

"Along with many people around the globe, New Zealanders have witnessed and celebrated the joy that the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have clearly found with their children Prince George and Princess Charlotte", Ardern said.

Lord Louis Mountbatten, who was known as "Dickie" by close friends, was the uncle of Prince Philip (96), Queen Elizabeth's husband. Queen Victoria made a decision to use the name of her husband, Albert, for all of her son's names. The couple may be leaving the option of using the name to Prince Harry, who will Wednesday Meghan Markle on May 19.

The new prince weighed in at 8 lbs., 7 oz., Kensington Palace tweeted. Baby name betting - yes, that actually happens - had odds on either Albert, Arthur or James being the couple's pick. William's name was announced after a week, and Charles's wasn't revealed publicly for a month. The English derivatives have become Louis and Lewis, with the name becoming Ludwig in the Germanic tongue. All three children were born at the same hospital where William and younger brother Prince Harry came into the world.
