Pride on line for MI as Rohit & Co face KXIP

05 May 2018

Thanks to a 12-ball 31* from Krunal Pandya, Mumbai Indians (MI) beat Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) by 6 wickets to stay alive in IPL 2018!

Sadly in a reversal of fortune later in the match, Krunal and Rohit combined to take 20 runs off the 18th over bowled by Stoinis in Mumbai's chase to take the game completely away from the hosts.

Suryakumar Yadav provided Mumbai the ideal start with a sublime 57 off 42 deliveries while Ishan Kishan (25) and Hardik Pandya (23) helped lay the foundation.

Mumbai's thrilling chase came after the heroics of Chris Gayle, who continued his explosive run in the IPL with a 50 off 40 balls to propel Kings XI Punjab to 174 for six. It was KXIP's third defeat in eight games as they remained at fourth in the points table with 10 points.

Gayle had gone before him, though, but only after doing that cradle act of his as he celebrated yet another half-century. His 42-ball knock was laced with six boundaries and three sixes.

In addition to Krunal's unbeaten 31, Hardik Pandya chipped in for the Indians with 23 from 13 deliveries.

A couple of overs back, Rohit had become the first Indian cricketer to score 300 sixes in all T20s after hitting Mujeeb Ur Rahman for his first maximum in the 17th over.

A sluggish start saw the beginning of innings for the men in red as they registered a below-par score in the powerplay overs considering the nature of the pitch.

Mumbai, who have now won three out of their nine games, are tied on six points with RCB, Delhi Daredevils and Rajasthan Royals. The opening stands in eight games has so far yielded: 7, 11, 102, 0, 1, 12, 69, 5.

He alongwith KL Rahul (24 off 20) gave KXIP another cracking start as the destructive duo shared a 54-run stand in 6.4 overs. But the onslaught came from Krunal Pandya as he hit Stoinis for two fours off consecutive balls and ended the over with a huge six over deep mid-wicket.

Rahul, on 24, hit leggie Mayank Markande, one of the few heart-warming stories for the Mumbai side this season, straight to J-P. Given the dimension of the Holkar Stadium, Gayle would be desperate to make it big in Indore and do what he does best- hit sixes. This time also, luck was also not on Yuvraj's side as he got run out after a mix-up with Karun Nair (23). I had to bring Jasprit in the 19th over with two set batsmen and if he struck, it would have made things easier for Hardik. Bumrah especially was brilliant conceding just 19 runs in four overs.
