Microsoft announces the Surface Hub 2

15 May 2018

Microsoft will begin testing Surface Hub 2 with select commercial customers in 2018 ahead of availability in 2019. The new Surface Hub 2 will have the capability of tiling which simply joins multiple Surface hub 2 allowing users to display multiple pieces of content side-by-side.

As Microsoft said it would do this year, it announced the Surface Hub 2 today, the next iteration of its popular business collaboration computer. As you'd expect, it includes integrated speakers, and far-field voice microphones that will work for Cortana and Skype calls.

The Surface Hub 2 allows the user to rotate the screen between portrait and landscape modes, with a nifty mechanism on the rear facilitating this. Robin Seiler, Microsoft's general manager of hardware engineering, said that the main point of the new Surface Hub is on productivity. By announcing it almost a year early, Microsoft is possibly aiming to outpace its competition and rope in a few businesses who typically order such devices in advance.

And Microsoft loves their hinges and this device is no different, it can now rotate 90 degrees.

Microsoft doesn't mention a larger unit like the current 84-inch model, and there's good reason why the company may not take this larger avenue: Tiling.

In terms of software, the device runs Windows 10, Office 365, Microsoft Whiteboard and Teams, the chat-based collaboration app that is steadily evolving into a full-fledged enterprise communications platform.

New Surface Hub comes with four flagship features and easier setup. I am not exactly sure what Microsoft considers to be a competitive device. The displays use the same 3:2 aspect ratio as the Surface mobile devices. Four of the massive screens can even be linked together. Pricing too, is yet been revealed, but Microsoft promises this is coming "soon".

For now, those who wish to receive more information when it's available can sign up at the Microsoft Surface Hub 2 product page. Hanging from a conference room wall or specialized stand, previous models were created to be used in landscape mode. With this in mind, we did learn two specific things about the display that sets the Surface Hub 2 apart. This device brings out the best bits of the Surface Hub 1 and advances all the parts that needed advancing.

Unfortunately, Microsoft doesn't plan to share further details of the Surface Hub 2 until later this year, including the price.
