Solo A Star Wars Story premieres at Cannes 2018

17 May 2018

"And somehow Han Solo - the roguish Star Wars hellion famous for breaking all the rules - finds himself in a feel-good movie that doesn't break any".

And while it's consistent with what we know about the character, Solo doesn't really add anything new that's crucial to our understanding of Han Solo, nor does it unlock anything that sheds new light on the older films. It gets to the point when you're waiting for a stormtrooper to march in and said, "Sorry, sir, but Milton has just stolen an escape pod, and he's heading for Tattooine with Yeats and Oscar Wilde!" The first trailer of the movie was released in February this year, creating a buzz among fans.

That's not just a coincidence, as the credits for Solo: A Star Wars Story confirm that Davis is playing the same character.

Nothing is going to wipe that smug grin off of Han Solo's face. Han's Dickensian youth just doesn't carry as much weight as the storytellers might have imagined. But it's his character in Solo: A Star Wars Story that harkens back to the first film in the saga. He meets Beckett (Woody Harrelson), a bandit who is pretending to be a soldier, and with a newly acquainted Wookie named Chewbacca, they set out to perform missions for their dodgy boss, Dryden Vos (Paul Bettany). Thandie Newton is cool as his second-in-command and lover Val, but she's more an attitude than a character. Jon Favreau voices the multi-limbed Ardennian pilot Rio Durant, who takes an instant liking to Han.

The fierce is strong with this one. Her bond with Lando in particular is both hilarious and daring and will surely provoke many conversations.

Solo: A Star Wars Story is out on May 24. "And while that means the story lacks the depth some might crave, it still offers plenty of fun, and (impressively for a prequel) the odd surprise along the way". He captures the wry wit and gunslinger swagger, mirroring enough of Ford's mannerisms to be familiar yet he also manages to not simply be a mere mimic by lending the character a dopey sweetness and vulnerability not always evident in Ford's version.

Everyone in the ensemble is terrific - but the show-stopping, effortlessly scene-stealing performance of the movie comes from Donald Glover as the charming, suave, sneaky-smart gambler and pilot Lando Calrissian. The decision to explore Lando's story is the right one, and not a surprising one.

A new adventure with the most beloved scoundrel in the galaxy.

A Star Wars Story now has a decent Rotten Tomatoes rating of 72 percent as of time of writing. This is the first Star Wars movie where it hasn't felt like it's being crushed by the portentous weight of what's to come.

The less than complimentary reviews, however, bemoan a lack of substance, and the feeling of a franchise now knocking out films for the sake of it.
