Harvey Weinstein arrested on rape, criminal sex act charges

28 May 2018

Once the most powerful man in Hollywood, disgraced producer Harvey Weinstein surrendered himself to NY police Friday morning, a watershed moment for the Me Too movement catalyzed last fall by the countless women who came forward with sexual harassment and assault allegations against him.

Harvey Weinstein has been formally charged with rape and sexual abuse after turning himself in to police in NY.

In the months since those allegations first surfaced, more than 80 women - including Gwyneth Paltrow, Angelina Jolie, Ashley Judd, Asia Argento and Rose McGowan - have come forward to claim Weinstein sexually harassed or assaulted them.

Embattled Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein turned himself in to police on Friday morning on criminal charges including rape and sexual misconduct. He appeared pale, standing next to his lawyer Ben Brafman, while prosecutors described a bail arrangement.

Weinstein's attorney, Benjamin Brafman, declined to comment when first contacted about the charges late Thursday, but previously said in court paperwork that the allegations that Weinstein forced himself on women were "entirely without merit" and that he never knowingly broke the law. "We believe that they are not factually supported by the evidence, and we believe that at the end of the process Mr Weinstein will be exonerated", Brafman, one of US' renowned criminal defense attorneys, told reporters outside the courthouse.

The New York Police Department issued a statement thanking "these fearless survivors for their courage to come forward and seek justice".

In another case, involving a woman who has not been named, Weinstein faces charges that include first-degree rape. And Lucia Evans said that in 2004, Weinstein made her perform oral sex on him when she was a student at Middlebury College.

Weinstein is also under investigation for alleged sex crimes in Los Angeles and London. This is the first official criminal charge levied on Weinstein.

"In 1997, I was raped by Harvey Weinstein here at Cannes", she said. But this is a big strike into the heart of abuse of power. The judge also imposed a temporary protective order directing Weinstein to stay away from the two women whose complaints prompted the charges.

Weinstein's rep released a statement following the publication of the New Yorker expose, denying the accusations against him. When asked if she could say something to Weinstein at that moment, McGowan simply said, "We got you".

"The NYPD thanks these courageous survivors for their courage to come forward and seek justice", the NYPD said in a statement. "Twenty years ago, I swore that I would right this wrong".

Boogie Nights actress Heather Graham, who has spoken of unsettling encounters with Weinstein in the early 2000s, wrote on Twitter that, instead of focussing on him, she would be celebrating powerful women. They did not identify the women.
