Atletico Madrid are seemingly making a huge effort to keep star forward Antoine Griezmann out of the clutches of La Liga rivals Barcelona, after it was reported the club are preparing a bumper new contract for the French worldwide.

Messi forged a strong and successful partnership with Neymar at Barcelona and the Argentine is keeping close tabs on developments.

"He is an exceptional player and if he was to come back to us it would be fantastic but it looks hard".

Atletico Madrid star Griezmann has been heavily linked with a move to the LaLiga champions during the off-season and confirmed after Friday's 3-1 win over Italy that his future would be confirmed before the World Cup.

Upfront, Lionel Messi is deployed as the support striker, meaning Griezmann could likely be played on the right before he eventually replaces Suarez when he moves on after a few years.

"The truth is I wouldn't like it if he went to Madrid".

ABC recently reported that Griezmann was ready to stay at the Wanda Metropolitano despite Barcelona's interest (h/t Jorge Garcia of AS).

'He's a great player and we would understand each other, ' Messi said in an interview with Mundo Deportivo. "Then it is the boss' problem [to fit everyone in]".

It is believed new Arsenal boss Unai Emery had been keen to sign the Belgium global when he was Paris Saint Germain manager and his representatives are due to meet with club officials this week.
