Trump had said during the Singapore summit that economic sanctions would remain in effect until North Korea reverses its nuclear programme, adding that there were no short-term plans to reduce the number of United States troops - some 28,500 - stationed in South Korea.
While President Moon Jae-in's so-called "three-belts" transport plan would benefit the North, given the poor state of its infrastructure, what the regime in the Pyongyang really wants is to ramp up special economic zones across the country, said Kim Byeong-uk. However, he left with a harsh reminder that the North Korean leader expects something in return.
The comments came after Pompeo had earlier Sunday in Tokyo brushed aside North Korea's accusation that the US was making "gangster-like" denuclearization demands of the North.
"The US just came out with such unilateral and gangster-like denuclearization demands as CVID, declaration, and verification that go against the spirit of the North-US summit meeting", he added, calling the talks "really disappointing". Pompeo, on the other hand, struck a positive tone while briefing reporters Saturday on the meetings, saying he had "very productive" and "good-faith" conversations with North Korean officials.
"North Korea reaffirmed its commitment to complete denuclearization", he said on Sunday during a visit to Japan.
He repeated that the United States would not push for any sanctions relief until after North Korea proved its nuclear program no longer existed and could not be rehabilitated.

"The road ahead will be hard and challenging and we know critics will try to minimize the work that we have achieved", he said. "It can be your miracle in North Korea as well", Pompeo said.
"If those requests were gangster-like, the world is a gangster", Pompeo said Sunday after meeting with his South Korean and Japanese counterparts in Tokyo.
Pompeo reported that the two sides had substantive discussions on next steps toward denuclearization and have set up working groups to hammer out details of an agreement.More news: Ostapenko & Kerber in to Wimbledon last four
The president's comments on China appeared to reflect concern that USA imposition of punitive tariffs on Chinese imports last week could make China less cooperative in pressuring the North over its nuclear and missile programs.
