Rangers Trade Cole Hamels To Cubs

28 July 2018

The Chicago Cubs have acquired veteran pitcher Cole Hamels from the Texas Rangers.

Hamels, 34, is 5-9 this season with a career-high 4.72 ERA in 20 starts.

On the year, his first with the Cubs, Chatwood now has a 4.98 ERA over 94.0 innings and 19 starts. The four-time All-Star won a World Series with the Phillies in 2008.

"To be able to change kind of the mindset, now to go on a first-place team, there's something inside of you that sparks when you get in those situations", Hamels said after the trade was announced. The Cubs are expected to provide the Rangers only secondary prospects and take on roughly $4 million of the $14.2 million-ish Hamels is owed between the rest of his salary this year and a $6 million buyout on his 2019 contract. "I have not liked him for a long time (as a foe because he was so hard to beat)". He compiled a 3.98 ERA in two seasons in Chicago. He was traded to Texas six days later.

Following a walk-off win Thursday, the Cubs (59-42) boasted the best record in the NL and held a 2½ -game lead in the Central over the Milwaukee Brewers, who had been in first place for most of the past two months until the Cubs caught and passed them two weeks ago. Darvish is signed through 2023. On July 25, 2015, in his last start for Philadelphia before being traded to the Texas Rangers, Hamels no-hit the Cubs at Wrigley Field. The Cubs emptied their once rich farm system on the way to three straight NLCS appearances and a historic championship in 2016, hurting their chances of making a major trade this year.

Butler will join the Rangers during their series this weekend in Houston. Hamels has made six starts at Wrigley, where he's 3-1 with a 1.76 ERA.
