07 August 2018

In addition to a string of shootings, a local teen died at the Lollapalooza music festival, which was held in the city over the weekend.

Police in Chicago said that a spate of deadly shootings over the weekend left at least 10 people dead and at least 59 wounded. One of the victims was a 17-year-old girl who was shot in the face.

New York's murder rate in 2017 was less than 300 homicides, a level last seen in 1959.

"The police department isn't here to raise children, we're not".

"The city of Chicago experienced a violent night", said Bureau of Patrol Chief Fred Waller.

"It's very rare we actually witness this stuff, ".

"Don't think for a moment people don't know who in the neighborhood was responsible", he said. "They do. They know that".

"I thank God it wasn't her time", White said. "I never hear people saying these individuals out here in the streets need to stop pulling the trigger".

The violence reached a peak early Sunday, when 30 people were shot in a three-hour span between midnight and 3 a.m., an average of one every five minutes or so.

He said that much of the weekend's violence was a result of gang members shooting at large crowds indiscriminately. "You could just feel the grief", said Eric Russell, a community activist who visited them.

Four more people were shot in a separate shooting at a block party in the same neighborhood of Lawndale just a few hours earlier, the Sun-Times reported.

The terse police log entries, summarized below, reflect some stark realities about Chicago's crime plague. Eddie Johnson angrily lashed out at armed criminals who repeatedly open fire in the city, often shooting innocent unintended victims. The suspects ran away on foot. Police say at least 11 people were killed and about 70 were wounded over the weekend. He was on the sidewalk with five other people, including a 14-year-old boy, when two men came up and started shooting, police said.

Johnson said, while investigators have "really good leads" on several of the shootings, police have not made any arrests.

Chicago police are working with federal authorities to help prevent more violent crimes in the city.

Waller said police were sticking with their strategy targeting illegal guns. He said shootings are down from this time a year ago.

Police seized 60 guns, adding to a total of 5,600 already confiscated in Chicago so far this year.

"By no means do these statistics mean we have a victory", Waller said. We won't be overrun by that small group, that small element that's committing these reckless acts.

Hospitals in Chicago were overwhelmed over the weekend dealing with the victims of gun violence. More than 200 people had converged on Stroger Hospital at one point, and access to the hospital was tightened.
